3D-ICONS is a pilot project funded under the European Commission’s ICT Policy Support Programme which builds on the results of CARARE and 3D-COFORM. Its main goal is to digitise in 3D architectural and archaeological monuments and buildings identified by UNESCO as being of outstanding cultural importance and make them available through Europeana.
News on Cloud Computing.
Completed in 2013, the CARARE project brought together heritage agencies and organisations, archaeological museums and research institutions and specialist digital archives from all over Europe to establish a service aimed to make digital content for Europe's unique archaeological monuments and historic sites interoperable with Europeana. It also added the 3D and Virtual Reality content to Europeana
Cloud for Europe
Started in June 2013, the Cloud for Europe project will build trust in European cloud computing by applying pre commercial procurement (PCP) as an instrument for industry innovation and simultaneously enhance cloud adoption in the public sector. The Project is funded by the European Commission under its Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and brings together 24 partners from 11 countries.
The European digital library, museum and archive is a prototype portal offering users direct access to more than 7 million digital objects, including film material, photos, paintings, sounds, maps, manuscripts, books, newspapers and archival papers. It was launched on 20 November 2008 by Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media.
Comprises of a number of projects funded by the European Commission, to contribute technology solutions and add content to Europeana.eu. LoCloud is part of this group.
Europeana Cloud is a Best Practice Network, coordinated by The European Library, aimed to establish a cloud-based system for Europeana and its aggregators.
Started in 2013 and lasting until 2015, Europeana Cloud will provide new content, new metadata, a new linked storage system, new tools and services for researchers and a new platform - Europeana Research. Content providers and aggregators across the European information landscape urgently need a cheaper, more sustainable infrastructure that is capable of storing both metadata and content.
The European Cloud Partnership (ECP) brings together industry and the public sector to establish a Digital Single Market for cloud computing in Europe. Trusted Cloud Europe has been prepared by the European Cloud Partnership (ECP) Steering Board to propose a set of ideas on how Europe can help public and private organisations use, buy and sell cloud computing services in a safe and trusted environment.
A web based platform designed and developed to facilitate aggregation of cultural heritage content and metadata in Europe. The platform allows the deployment and operation of different aggregation schemes (thematic or cross-domain, international, national or regional) and corresponding access rights. Registered institutions can upload (http, ftp, oai-pmh) their metadata records in xml or csv serialization in order to manage, aggregate and publish their collections. NMC Horizon Report: 2012 Museum Edition: Cloud Computing
This annual report is produced by The New Media Consortium and focuses on emerging technology and its applications to museum education and interpretation.
PATHS is funded by the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme under Digital Libraries and Digital Preservation programme. The project is working on the development of a system that acts as an interactive personalised tour guide through existing digital library collections.
TAG CLOUD (Technologies lead to Adaptability & lifelong enGagement with culture throughout the CLOUD) is a European project co-funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission aimed to generate lifelong engagement with cultural heritage through social media, augmented reality and storytelling applications based on the technology of the cloud.
The goal of the EU-funded VISION Cloud project is to introduce a powerful ICT infrastructure for reliable and effective delivery of data-intensive storage services, facilitating the convergence of ICT, media and telecommunications. The primary deliverables of VISION Cloud will be an architecture and a reference implementation of a cloud-based infrastructure, built on open standards and new technologies, to provide a scalable, flexible and dependable framework for optimised delivery of data-intensive storage services. This three-year research project is led by IBM and funded by the European Union’s FP7 programme.
